Growing up on a small family farm in Stroud, NSW, Britnee Breneger has been riding horses ever since she could walk. Like many young horse riders her competitive career started off at the local Pony Club, then show riding at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. With both her father and sister avid camp drafters, it was inevitable that at the young age of 13 Britnee took up campdrafting and hasn’t looked back.
In Year 8 Britnee started at NEGS in Armidale, a unique school renowned for its leading Equestrian Centre facilities and programs. She says her reason for choosing NEGS was ‘because of my pure love of horses. I loved the idea that I could study, still ride my horses and be able to take my riding to the next level with the quality coaches NEGS has to offer’. Now in Year 11, Britnee has certainly taken advantages of all the opportunities NEGS Equestrian offers. She is an outstanding member of the NEGS Campdraft squad, a program centred around the education of young campdrafting students and competitors. Life as a NEGS boarder can be especially busy when balancing academic school work, caring for your horse, training before and after school, and competing on the weekends. For Britnee it is a balancing act which she can only do thanks to the support of her school.
'Being a boarder here at NEGS is like a home away from home, my fellow boarders are like sisters and it is like one big family. The support from the teachers makes learning so much easier. Managing study and horses can get a little tricky but with all the support I receive I am able to keep on top of my work and still look after my horses.'
After receiving her first horse around the age of 3, Britnee has now expanded her team. ‘My favourite horse would have to be Spud, he is by TR Dual Rey and has been a great horse for me, giving everything he has in every run I have on him.Secret Time is also one of my campdraft horses, who we bought 2 year ago at the Landmark sale. After having much success with Ben Hall, Secret Time is by One Time Royalty, he is an incredible horse to ride and I am slowly building my connection with him. These two are my main campdraft horses and I would be lost without them’.
As a member of the NEGS Campdrafting Squad Britnee is trained by coach Codie Law and NEGS resident coach Robert Newsome, both of whom she credits with helping her to improve and getting her to where she is today. Recently, 3 bison have been introduced which have become invaluable additions, enriching the campdraft program and providing regular opportunities for the members of the NEGS Campdraft Squad to train with their horses. Britnee says ‘the bison at NEGS have really helped me improve myself and my horses, this has allowed all the campdrafting students to step up to the next level and really be able to train our horses. I believe that the bison will help the NEGS Campdraft Squad take our training to the next level’.
In June, Britnee won the Maiden at the Maules Creek Campdraft with her horse Spud. ‘There were 209 riders in the event, I received an 87 in round one and had to go in a run-off and then received an 82 in the run-off to win. This was my first open age win and it was very exciting for me. I would like to thank Jodie Mobberley for the prize I won.’.
