The term Developmental Orthopedic Disease (DOD) encompasses all general growth disturbances and orthopedic problems seen in growing foals as well as some found in older horses.
Developmental diseases are non-infectious and range from angular deformities in foals that might be remedied by age to crippling cervical vertebral malformations. Although a single factor to prevent DOD has not been identified yet, several are known to be important, including nutrition. Numerous feeding and management programs have been designed to decrease the incidence and severity of the disease.
